If you haven’t heard the news…my new website has launched! (Check it out at www.boldbusinessworks.com)
Like the shoemaker’s children who run around barefoot, I was too long without a professional website that reflected my new branding.
But I learned a few lessons along the way…maybe you’ll learn a thing or two from my long, bumpy road to web launch.
Check out the site, leave a comment on my blog, let me know what you think!

Some Things I Learned Along the Way
|
My new site was built using WordPress, which is open source software that is primarily meant for blogs. It was wrestled into submission by Joe Howard, a local graphic designer and project-managed by my former business partner and all-around great guy Kevin McGillivray.
1. WordPress is not as easy as everyone says it is. People rave about how simple it is. And yes, it is quite easy if all you are doing is a simple journaling-type blog. But as a content management system, it requires a fair amount of technical knowledge, using plug-ins and add-ons and widgets.
2. You need to give up perfection as a goal. If I’d waited to “release” the website until it was final and every i dotted and every t crossed, I’d still be waiting. Yes, there are a few broken links and two testimonials that don’t seem to rotate properly. We’re working on it. With the Internet, you’ve got to get it up.
3. When you work with a designer, some things are going to get lost in translation. Even if you think you are being very explicit about what your vision is, there are some things that are difficult to communicate. Our best meetings were in-person where we could scribble on pieces of paper—how old-fashioned.
4. Everything takes longer than you think it should. That’s really a truism that crosses boundaries beyond website development and applies to business…and life! But good things are worth waiting for!
