If your website is your "storefront" (as it is for many of us in a service business)---then you must pay attention to how people experience your site---and while you may never have thought about it, when someone visits your site on their phone, it can look and work very differently than the "standard" version of your site.
My webinar last month with my colleague (and former business partner) Kevin McGillivray of Buena Consulting was on this subject and I thought the information was really important to share. Here are some of the critical takeaways:
- People doing a search on a mobile phone will only see a few results because the screen is so small. You've got to make sure you are optimized to come up on top.
- Once people arrive at your site, their small screen only shows a small portion of the top part of your site. Go look at it on an iPhone and see what shows. If it's not very helpful or informative, you may want to reformat for mobile browers.
- If people are looking at your site on their phone, they may be ready to transact or talk to you, so put your phone number, address and map links right up at the top of the page so they can take immediate action.
- Remember that iPhones and iPads don't like Java, Flash or any other Adobe plug-ins, so if your site is using them, you'll miss out on mobile users.
- Here's another one I would add---make sure to send a text-only version of your newsletter so folks can read it on their phones, too!
You can work with your web developer to make sure your standard site is compatible for mobile users or you can create a mobile version of your site so that when a mobile browser accesses your site, the streamlined site opens up.
