Dear Bold Business Works Community:
This is a time of much change for me and my family. As my daughter graduates high school, my husband and I are returning to New York City, making a full circle over the past twenty years.
I know I will stay in touch with all the many clients, colleagues and friends I have made here over the past four years in Baltimore, just as I have my long list of California folks. Have a great summer!

What do you wish someone had told you?

My daughter, Amy graduates from high school today. She will go off to Vassar College in the fall and on to great adventures and a wonderful future. | Amy at her preschool graduation, 2000 |
So what can you give a kid who has everything? Some words of wisdom. Her father and I have done our best along the way to give her our ideas, but for Amy's graduation present, I reached out to all of the various adults, relatives and friends in Amy's life to ask them for "commencement address advice they wish someone had given them." Over twenty five people responded and I have been truly touched by the effort and thought that went into every answer. We assembled it all into a photo book that we presented to her and she will always have our words of wisdom with her. At the risk of offending some of the dear friends and family members who contributed to the book, I've extracted just a few bits to share with you:
- Four years of undergraduate education is a great gift...I would even say a great luxury. Treasure the time. Do not be in a hurry! (ATG)
- Ask for what you want and need from people in relationships both personal and professionally...here's a tip... they are not mind readers. (MEB)
-
You don't have to know what you are going to do for the rest of your life. Study and major in whatever interests you. You do not need to know what you will do with it. (LLH)
- Make your bed. Your sardine can of a dorm room will look so much cleaner that way. (SML)
- Remember to always believe in yourself, no matter how difficult the obstacle-and there will be plenty of obstacles, which we all need to face through our journey. But if you trust in yourself, you will get through any challenge. (JOF)
My aunt Carol so loved this idea that she went and solicited a bunch of different people in her life to gather their advice for Amy. I hope that you freely steal this graduation gift idea. Would love to hear from any of you that have advice you would want to share, too. Congrats, Amy!
