Wondering about QR Codes?
 You may have seen these strange-looking square figures on print ads or business cards and wondered what they were all about. I was curious myself, so I've gotten a crash course in QR codes and thought I'd share what I've learned.
QR stands for Quick Response and these two-dimensional codes can be generated for free and are readable by smartphones equipped with QR readers (also free) and can contain text, photos, or most commonly URLs. They can can store more data than standard barcodes, including url links, geo coordinates, and text like coupons. QR codes are quite common in Japan, Korea and the Netherlands, but have been slower to take hold here in the United States. New smartphones frequently come loaded with QR readers, but the penetration of the readers is still low, maybe 5% of all US cell phone users. That hasn't stopped some big name consumer brands to begin experimenting with print campaigns that use the code.
Should you care about QR codes? My educated opinion: not yet, and maybe not ever. As my colleague Linda Schenk (VirtualLinda) said recently at a meeting (paraphrasing): "The only people I hear talking about QR codes are marketing experts who make money when clients need help with QR marketing campaigns." I'm in a wait-and-see mode on QR codes, to see what innovative ways marketers use them and if that drives downloads of the readers.
